A bent rule here, a broken pledge there...

"Things will be different, you'll see. We're not like those evil Republicans - we'll actually work with the minority to make sure their voices get heard, too."

Riiiiiiiiiight. Like that was ever going to happen.

It took the Democrats almost no time after assuming the majority before that particular promise to voters went out the window. For a rundown of what sorts of parliamentary games the Democrats have been playing, take a look at Patrick O'Connor's article in today's Politico.

Most recently, in case you haven't heard, Democrats threatened to revise the rules of the House to take away Republicans' right to move to recommit bills (one of the few tactics available to the minority to remove a bill from consideration by sending it back to committee). To do so, they would have had to change a rule that has been in place since 1822 - but they were more than ready.

Thankfully, Republicans weren't willing to take that lying down, and a protest was led by conservative Congressman Lynn Westmoreland, who organized a series of procedural votes every half hour that ground Congressional proceedings to a halt. After almost three hours, the Democrats backed down.

They could have at least pretended they were going to try to keep their promise...
