Detroit's Democrat Mayor Faces Criminal ChargesWhat is it with these Democrat political leaders? New Jersey's Governor Jim McGreavy is forced to resigned after being exposed as a homosexual who, among other things, appointed his boyfriend -- an Israeli chef -- as NJ Director of Homeland Security. Then recently we watched New York's Governor Elliot Spitzer step down after being exposed as a prostitute-monger. That was followed by his replacement admitting to numerous extramarital affairs and drug use. And now Detroit's Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, another Democrat, was charged with eight felonies in an obstruction-of-justice case. His aide was also charged in this latest scandal. The 37-year-old Kilpatrick is known as Detroit's "Hip-Hop Mayor" and he resembles a rapper more than a political leader. He was charged with obstruction of justice, perjury and misconduct in office all linked to an affair he had with his former chief of staff Christine Beatty. According to the Detroit News, besides lying to the jury, Kilpatrick also settled a lawsuit with several former police officers who were awarded $8.4 million in tax dollars in order to hide the fact that he had lied under oath about his romantic relationship with Beatty, said Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy. If convicted, Detroit's "playah mayah" will surely lose his job while facing a long stretch in prison. Each count of perjury carries with it a maximum 15-year sentence. Kilpatrick faces four. He also faces five years each for the two charges of misconduct in office and two charges of obstruction of justice. In the brief news conference held when he turned himself in to the police, Kilpatrick described the case as "a very flawed process from the beginning." This isn't the first time when Kilpatrick's desire for high life got him into trouble. Before the romantic affair with his chief of staff had come to light, Kilpatrick faced allegations of organizing a party at the mayor's mansion attended by strippers and prostitutes. The case developed when members of Kilpatrick' security detail filed suit against the city after they were punished for investigating allegations of misconduct by the mayor and his bodyguards. The mayor and his chief of staff testified during the civil court proceedings last fall that they were never lovers and never had a sexual relationship. Then an $8.4-million settlement with the police officials was approved, but soon after that the Detroit Free Press released spicy parts from more than 14,000 text messages sent to and from Beatty's pager in 2002 and 2003. A message such as "I'm madly in love with you" sent by Kilpatrick to Beatty, is surely in contradiction with the mayor's testimony. "Even children understand that lying is wrong," the prosecutor, Mr.Worthy said. "Lying cannot be tolerated even if a judge and jury sees through it," he added. Question: Why isn't the news media and the GOP talking about a culture of corruption in the Democrat Party? More Articles« Did Bill and Hillary Play Footsies with Terrorists? | Main |
