McKeon, Republican Colleagues Put Stop to Political Games Surrounding Troop Funding

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Rep. Howard P. "Buck" McKeon (R-Santa Clarita) issued the following statement on May 16 after House Republicans stifled Democrats from using American troops and veterans in a political maneuver to add unrelated spending increases to the emergency war Supplemental Appropriations Bill:

"This week we saw Democrats engaging in political maneuvers at the expense of our troops, so I joined my Republican colleagues to put a quick stop to the antics on the House floor. It is unacceptable that Democrats attempted to attach a $51 billion tax increase and over $72 billion in domestic spending to a bill that should solely provide for our troops and veterans. Despite the disappointing result of this week's effort to pass a clean troop funding bill, Republicans will continue working toward a bipartisan solution that provides the critical funding our military leaders say we need immediately."

NOTE: Three amendments were brought to the House floor for a vote late yesterday to amend H.R. 2642, the emergency war Supplemental Appropriations Bill. One amendment addressed war funding, another focused on war policy restrictions, and the third amendment included a more than $50 billion tax increase in domestic spending.

If you think our war effort is in dire straights, wait and see what President Obama -- with his two years experience in the Senate -- will do to our military. President Jimmy Carter Redux. But without the laughs.
