Protecting Our First Liberty

On November 21, 2006, the Alliance Defense Fund released their new guide for Christian students to educate them on their First Amendment rights of free speech and religious expression on public school campuses. With the constant barrage of attacks against Christianity throughout the US, ADF again was at the forefront of the battle against the secular-progressive leviathan

"Christian students do not abandon their First Amendment rights at the schoolhouse gate," said ADF President, CEO, and General Counsel Alan Sears.

"For years, many schools have bowed to the fear, disinformation, and intimidation of the ACLU and its allies when it comes to religious speech and expression on campus. This guide dispels many of the myths that have been used to bully school officials to silence Christian students, and instructs on the true meaning of the First Amendment when it comes to religious expression and activity," he said.

The 32-page guide, "Knowing Your Rights," provides information on equal access for religious clubs to use campus facilities, what religious clubs can do on campus (including university campuses), and the rights of teachers and administrators to participate in religious expression.

This was just one action undertaken by the ADF to protect Christians from persecution, discrimination and abuse by either federal, state and local government, or anti-religous groups whose goal is to silence Christians in the public square.

In another action, ADF attorneys filed a motion on November 27 in federal court to intervene on behalf of an inner-city Detroit church "hung out to dry due to the actions of the American Atheists."

The city had asked the church and other downtown establishments to alter the appearance of their properties to improve the city's image for the upcoming Super Bowl in exchange for being reimbursed for half the expense. But because the atheist group has now sued the city, the city has been forced to withhold reimbursement from the church, even though the church has already secured a loan for and completed the requested improvements.

"A small band of radicals should not blackmail a city into reneging on a contract that it had every intention of honoring," said ADF Senior Counsel Kevin Theriot. "This church was simply being a good neighbor by complying with the city's desire to present the best possible image to Super Bowl visitors. Just because a radical group doesn't like the church, they cannot demand that the city put the brakes on the funds the city promised."

The Alliance Defense Fund is a legal alliance defending the right to hear and speak the Truth through strategy, training, funding, and litigation. The ADF was founded in 1994 by 35 ministries for a unique purpose: to aggressively defend religious liberty by empowering Christian allies, recognizing that together, they can accomplish far more than any single ministry can alone.

One of the ADF's guiding principles is that they are committed to anticipating and meeting the legal needs of those dedicated to preserving religious liberty. In civil litigation cases, the ADF provides some of the nation's top trial lawyers and First Amendment experts to work pro bono on cases that have an impact of Christians' liberties.

The ADF believes it is a servant organization that provides the resources that will keep the door open for the spread of the Gospel through the legal defense and advocacy of religious freedom, the sanctity of human life, and traditional family values.

During ADF's first decade it has partnered with and/or acted in alliance with more than 125 ministries and organizations.

Some of these alliances have been very limited such as for a single case or project, others have been very extensive for a large number of cases and/or projects, and others have been ongoing from our inception to date.

ADF Allies are those who willingly share common values on one or more of the issues within ADF's mission.
