Melissa Hart
Biography from the candidate's website (www.peoplewithhart.com): Melissa Hart was first elected to Congress in 2000 despite a long Democratic history in Pennsylvania's Fourth District. She is the first Republican to represent the district in more than two decades, and the first Republican woman ever to represent Pennsylvania in either house of Congress. Before her election to Congress, Melissa served for ten years in the Pennsylvania Senate, where she chaired the Senate Finance Committee and earned a reputation as a tireless advocate for Pennsylvania taxpayers. Melissa serves on the Committee on Ways and Means. Created in 1789, Ways and Means is the oldest standing Committee in Congress. Due to its broad jurisdiction on critical issues - involving economic policy, international trade, welfare, Social Security, Medicare and health care policy - the committee occupies a pivotal place in the U.S. House of Representatives. Melissa is a native of the North Hills of Pittsburgh and a graduate of North Allegheny High School, Washington & Jefferson College, and the University of Pittsburgh School of Law. Melissa is a member of the boards of the University of Pittsburgh, Community College of Allegheny County, Washington and Jefferson College, the Vietnam Veterans Leadership Project, the Pittsburgh Film Office, the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre, and is a member of St. Alexis Church in Wexford. This year, Melissa Hart is running for re-election in a district with a Democratic advantage in voter registration of more than 55,000. She has won six elections in solidly Democratic districts by running aggressive, grass-roots campaigns that involve volunteers--Republicans and Democrats alike--from throughout the district who share her commitment to building a brighter future for our region and for the entire nation.
