Rob Wittman
Biography from the candidate's website (www.robwittmanforcongress.com): "Rob Wittman has the dedication, philosophy of governance, and experience in elective office that has prepared him to provide the 1st Congressional District of Virginia - America's First District - with the steady, rock-solid representation it has received for decades on Capitol Hill from Paul Trible, Herb Bateman and Jo Ann Davis. Rob won the Republican nomination for the 1st District's congressional seat on November 10, defeating 10 other candidates at a GOP convention attended by more than 1,000 delegates at Milford, Caroline County. He is running in a special election on December 11 to fill a vacancy created by the October 6 death of Rep. Jo Ann Davis after a long battle with breast cancer. For more than 20 years, Rob has served in several levels of government, from Montross Town Council to the Virginia General Assembly. Rob won his first campaign for public office in 1986 when he was elected to the Montross Town Council, where he served for 10 years, four of them as Mayor. During his tenure, he helped build a municipal sewer system and developed a computerized tax billing system that cut burdensome paperwork and saved the taxpayers money. In 1995, Rob was elected to the Westmoreland County Board of Supervisors and was elected its Chairman in 2003, leading the way for building three new libraries, providing tax relief for seniors, and raising teacher salaries to competitive levels. In 2005, voters in the 99th Legislative District elected Rob to the Virginia House of Delegates, where he serves on three important committees - Agriculture, Chesapeake and Natural Resources; Militia, Police and Public Safety; and Transportation - and has been a strong voice for keeping taxes low, supporting education, and protecting the environment while encouraging new jobs. Rob, 48, is a Field Director for the Virginia Health Department's Division of Shellfish Sanitation. Earlier, he worked for many years as an environmental health specialist for local health departments in Virginia's Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula regions. He holds a Ph.D. in Public Policy and Administration from Virginia Commonwealth University, a Master of Public Health degree in Health Policy and Administration from the University of North Carolina, and a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Virginia Tech. Rob's wife, Kathryn, a teacher at Cople Elementary School in Hague, is a Westmoreland County native whom he met when he spent high school and college summer recesses working in a Leedstown tomato cannery and on a Reedville fishing boat in the Northern Neck. They live in Montross and have two children: a daughter, Devon, 25, and a son, Josh, 20."
